I also read Bridget Jones too early - although I did find it funny at the time, I certainly didn’t appreciate what Fielding was doing. Returning to it as an adult was a very different experience for me. I found some aspects of the story quite sad and disturbing - particularly Bridget’s relationship with her body. And I developed a new-found respect for Shazzer!
I recently rewatched the film to discuss with some students, and felt like it was rushed. And the discussions we had about body image and body positivity were interesting.
I remember disliking her mother a lot, even then. But I wonder if l'll view her more sympathetically now.
This makes me want to go back and read Bridget Jones with a more critical eye.
I was far too young when I read it the first time. I really just remember thinking, "Oh, so adults have no idea what they're doing either!"
